Would it be possible to have kits for those who live near power lines? Even though the devices would have to use some attenuation, if it could pick up the local strikes that are within 8 - 10 km, it would be still usable for the map. Also a sound pressure (microphone) could be used to calibrate the expanding sound circles.
I occasionally see lightning strikes in the Oceania region that only have 3 participants, and 2 of the participants are from Hawaii and Bangkok (myself), with a third participant from somewhere in Australia/NZ. At first I just discounted these as random associations, since if a strike had occurred in the region shown, then surely many other stations in Australia would have participated. But I've seen this happen a number of times, so has got me thinking. Is this a detection from the opposite side of the earth?
If only three stations participate, then I believe there are 2 possible location solutions. One solution is in between the 3 stations, and the other solution is on the opposite side of the earth. If 4 or more stations participate, then there should only be one location solution.
See attached for a recent example. This "apparent strike" has occurred quite close to the station in Australia, so the alternate solution wouldn't be exactly on the opposite of the earth but a bit to the south of that opposite point... which I can guess to be around the equator somewhere off the West coast of Africa. Checking out the WWLLN maps, there is indeed lightning activity in that area, at the time of the strike.
Is this alternate strike location a feasible explanation?
For more than two days http://www.blitzortung.org/Webpages/inde...=en&page=5 page displays the wrong data on the number of discharges detected by the stations. Values do not change, also did not change the number of signals. Date of last signal is still: 2014-10-24 8:40
Yesterday, my IP was 192.168.1.66 and that was the way the station was set up. Everything worked just fine.
Sometime during the night, the modem reset to 192.168.1.64. From everything I can tell, the station is transmitting and receiving but if I look for the station (1218) it no longer appears on the map.
Since it is so quiet at the moment, I can't tell if the server is seeing it or not.
Some of you may be interested in a quick app I've put together, that runs from a Windows PC. Basically, it gives predictions of where the GPS (and Glonass) satellites are, to assist in deciding where may be the best place to locate your GPS antenna.
I'm not certain about the best way of sharing this, so I've shared it from a Google Drive, which you should be able to access from the following link.
Note this is version 1.0 release and hot off the press. Should be working OK. The ZIP file contains an EXE and a PDF file. The PDF files gives a quick summary of how to use it. Just put the EXE file anywhere and run directly.
Hello everyone, I found this brilliant project whilst surfing the net looking for a solution to a particular challenge and I wanted to post as it may be of some interest to members on here who love a technical problem!! I am very new to this but am studying the PDF data closely to catch up!!
This may sound crazy- but what would be the feasibility of taking a station on an around the world flight in a small light aircraft....
The internet link would be covered by a satellite internet connection.
The antenna could be mounted anywhere *inside* and within the aircraft.
So lets discuss, would my crazy idea work or would the speed of the aircraft (130-150 knots) and thus moving station need to be compensated for etc?
*EDIT* I've had a quick fish around the forum and gather noise interference from the aircraft's electronics could be an issue :-(
I look forward to a great technical discussion :-)
