  Newbie Questions
Posted by: chubros - 2015-02-18, 06:14 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (3)

Hello to everyone. I just completed my red h-field kit and i had some questions.

1) I had 2 ferrite rod 200mm antennas. Should i cut their cables and solder them to new thickest ones??

2)Do i need any special settings in the controller? I have it in automatic mode.

Thanks in advance..

  how accurate is this ntp
Posted by: hans - 2015-02-17, 21:24 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (11)

i believe very accurate or let's say extremely precise.
otherwise the calculation for the location of the lightning strokes could not be done.

of course i switched on the NTP server functionality. as with every watch one wants have it running very exactly. even if it is in a way of precision i never can use it. i configured my solaris server to use my system red as stratum 1. additional i configured 2 stratum 1 server near my location in vienna with "noselect". as i know from the past it is always bad if delay and especially jitter is high. and one additional from the location where the time is made ( braunschweig :-) also with "noselect". i also have a DCF77 which has per definition a big systemic error. i adjusted this with the "fudge" statement to be _near_ the GPS signal. when i look i have most of the time a situation like this:

PHP Code:
# ntpq -pn

remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset  jitter
==============================================================================
+
192.168.241.93  .DCFa.           1 u   62 1024  377    0.743   -0.706   4.345
*192.168.241.190 .GPS.            1 u  365 1024  377    0.917   -0.001   0.139
 192.53.103.108
.PTB.            1 u  418 1024  377   46.284   -8.819   0.673
 178.189.127.147
.ATOM.           1 u  996 1024  377   21.794   -5.281   0.512
 131.130.251.107
.PPS.            1 u  205 1024  377   18.983   -6.134  12.341

my server takes the time from system red (*192.168.241.190) and has a typically offset between 6 and 8 ms against the others stratum 1. that means that system red is in average 7 ms in the future against the others. unfortunately the "fudge" statement works only for reference clocks and not for the system red i configured in my server which is stratum 2.

i don't know how many of you are using system red as ntp server. any feedback about experience from you about this topic is welcome.

maybe the future brings a possibility to enter an offset for the ntp server functionality. but i know it's not the primary function of this system.

finally i want to say thank you to Egon and others for this great project.

kind regards
hans

  bandwidth hog
Posted by: jrm30655 - 2015-02-14, 17:02 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (1)

My controller has suddenly become a bandwidth hog, especially on the upload side.

I've also noticed that the server is not seeing strokes but the map is showing the station is logging strikes. When I click on the red dot on the left, it shows that the station is not active. However, when I actually look at the controller directly, it is working great.

Anyone else having this problem?

  Schematic help
Posted by: Lawrence Stoskopf - 2015-02-13, 04:44 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (7)

I've completed RED system boards received a week ago. Loaded the software and got an OK from the programmer (after updating the ST firmware). All of the LEDs are appropriate and the Ethernet controller flashes appropriately. But screen is dark. Checking the module supply voltage on pin 2 gives me about 2.3 volts. On pin 3 sort of varies, but positive rather than the expected negative. I do have 5 volts on the back lite supply pin17. These measurements with or without the module DIP122-5NLED installed.

This is PCB10 ver4 11/2013. The pdf instructions Figure 43 with the schematic (for ver3) is blank. I can probably follow traces and do a schematic, but pin 2 doesn't seem to have a trace to my eyes and it would be a lot easier with a schematic.

Anyone help? Thanks,

Hi all,

I am just watching (nearly 20.00 UTC Sunday) local commercial weather site (Weatherzone) some monsoonal activity in northern Australia. PNG and Indonesia, with their site indicting some lightning activity but no hits in the Blitz system for any Oceania stations, why??

  programming procedure
Posted by: Jim Mandaville - 2015-02-08, 16:59 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (1)

I'm a newby here with completed hardware that seems to check out all right.

Does the first step in programming (after obtaining a user account) involve downloading the firmware from the Blitzortung "service" area? If so, where should this best be placed in one's computer? Does entering it later as a "program" require its location info (in the form of file links? Or can one just use the name Firmware.bin?

I plan to use the STM32 link utility.

Any guidance appreciated.

Jim

Could someone give me a steer on what kind of cable to use for connecting the controller to my modem/router? Obviously ethernet, but should it be CAT5e network type?
