Possibility of contributing to a second-tier experimenta hardware / software effort?
Posted by: louloulou - 2020-08-16, 19:04 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - No Replies

First off, I want to express how impressed I am with this effort. The work here is amazing, and I cannot accurately  express how impressed I am. As an Electrical Engineer of 30+ years, I see the greatness of this projects contributors , spanning many disciplines of  RF, Digital, PCB, Embedded, Mathematics, and web-development. What an amazing team effort. What an amazing team! I want to be on it.

To that point, I really, really, really, really want to contribute. I am on the list to become a station, but the list is long, and I am number 6352 on the list. I assume it will be a very, very long time before I see my kit. So, I humbly ask, would it be OK, and would anyone be interested in a  2nd-tier EXPERIMENTAL effort (asking for / with the full blessings of the original developers) ? Perhaps with lower cost, simpler hardware? Not as "good" but ubiquitous and fun for the "rest of us" ?

My field of expertise is in RF/ FPGA /Embedded design.  I would --love-- to build a "simpler" station,  perhaps with a much shorter range (as there seems to be no end of people who wish to have a station, so range does not seem to be that important) and with perhaps much tighter timing accuracy?

Spit balling here, us an FPGA /  GPS 1PPS to time tag "events" from a voltage-mode threshold detector (i.e. less sensitive, but more timing accurate than an ADC)   to report back to an experimental server?  Keep the hardware CHEAP and SIMPLE, perhaps make it a Pi-Zero hat?   As for the FPGA / PCB design, I can handle that, and I can even build a medium volume of prototypes, (which I will fund / sell at $0 profit / cost) as I have pick and place machinery at my disposal (I am blessed to own a small scientific manufacturing company)

What I am proposing here is and effort "for the rest of us" -- I am in NO WAY trying  to offend the original contributors of this magnificent system. In fact, I really want, and need,  their help and their blessing. If the project data becomes useful, maybe they could even integrate the data collection into their "production" system,

Again, I come to this effort hat-in-hand, with the best intentions.

    Thank you,

    ---Lou

  Completed System Blue for Sale
Posted by: aprwx - 2020-08-13, 20:20 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - No Replies

I've got a System Blue, completed/all put together that I want to sell.
I've got another one and the 2nd location where this was is no longer available to me, so I've got an extra system blue to sell to someone who can put it to use.

Please see listing on eBay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Blitzortung-Lig...4458493734

I'm asking for $600 USD because I had originally purchased it on eBay for that price.

new to this project and love it! wanna help!
Posted by: louloulou - 2020-08-13, 20:13 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Hi.

I  am an Electrical Engineer that has been building TDOA
systems for about the last 20 years. I have always wanted
to build a  lightning geo location system, but it looks like
I have been beaten to the punch.

My question is, where can I buy the parts for this setup ?
Is there a kit available? I cant seem to find a GIT hub for the
software / boards etc..

I have pick and place machinery available to me, so if there
is interest in a group build, I would be happy to help.

   Thanks!!

Journalism student looking for cool science
Posted by: saimamaysidik@gmail.com - 2020-08-13, 13:23 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Hello lightning enthusiasts! I'm a journalism student in MIT's Graduate Program for Science Writing, and I'm doing preliminary research to find cool science to write about while I'm in this program. I think Blitzortung and lightningmaps.org are really neat, and I'm wondering if anyone would like to give me some background info on these projects. How did they get started? What motivates members to participate? I read here that Blitzortung was used to pinpoint the origin of a forest fire in Australia. How else have the data been used?

Thank you everyone!

Saima

Hi Everyone,

Do someone know how to extract a list of strike a specific station detect with that information:

Date, Time, Latitude, Longitude, Distance, number of partipant

Example my station number is 2764, I will like to be able to extract the data per hours or per day with a php script.

Thank's for your help

Question Purple Rain Radar Signature?
Posted by: silhouex - 2020-07-10, 09:00 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (6)

Hey folks,
been using the lightningmaps site for a few years now. However just tonight I saw a large purple "cloud". I've never seen this before is this a really thick cloud? Noteable the image vanished in the few minutes it took me to discover this forum. Clouds don't just vanish right? I'm pretty sure this was somewhere over the southwestern states.
I should point out that this was at night. I know weather radar isn't as reliable at night. Also, not saying it was but the purple cloud had a shape you would expect from a splash or an explosion.

Are their any other colors I might see other than green, yellow, red, pink and white?
Is there a "legend" somewhere for the lightningmaps site?

Thank you all for your replies.

edit: Interestingly the same thing happened in the same general region, tonight. I managed to get a screen shot before it disappeared. Leaning more towards some kind of error?

edit 2: Added 2nd image showing the same place moments after posting. The signature is gone again.

  HomeAssistant extension
Posted by: mrk - 2020-07-02, 21:30 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (2)

Hello!
Any HomeAssistant users here? I've just created custom component for HomeAssistant: https://github.com/mrk-its/homeassistant-blitzortung It monitors for lightnings in given area  and provides realtime sensors with distance / azimuth / ligntning count. I try to comply with data usage rules at http://en.blitzortung.org/contact.php#contribution_7 - for example end users connect  through proxy mqtt service, so only single websocket connection to Blitzortung server is required.
Let me know what do you think about, thanks!

Location does not exist on CYA page
Posted by: daftpunk - 2020-06-27, 14:53 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi all,

I find this project interesting and wondered if my location is suitable to be considered for a detector? Unfortunately I can't accurately sign up using the form on the "cover your area" (CYA) page as I am not listed. I live on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, between England and France. The Lat and Long are 49.4482° N, 2.5895° W .

Any advice on how to proceed would be great!

Thanks
