Question Changing the "Home" location of the Blue Dot.
Posted by: BassManDanny - 2019-08-19, 03:28 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (5)

Running the Real Time Lightning Map on the home computer - NOT a smartphone - how do you change the "home" location of the blue dot indicator? It has me registered at an incorrect town and I would like to have it show closer to my home. Thanks for any help, Danny.

  map legend : station status
Posted by: DumbleDore - 2019-08-12, 03:22 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (5)

On the map, when you click on the "antenna" symbol, the instructions say

Quote:Shows stations on the map. Higher levels also show currently participarting stations (purple), offline ones and station names.
That could be improved in a number of ways, starting with the color code. I observe that the actual color code used on the map is something like this:
  • black -- vestigial stations. Example: Sunspot, New Mexico. Such stations show up on the map, but not in station status listings such as http://en.blitzortung.org/station_list.php
  • red -- dysfunctional stations. Example: station 2572 (Buckeye, Arizona). Such stations have produced few if any valid signals recently.

  • blue -- interference stations. Example: station 1042 (Mesa, Arizona).

  • green -- good stations.
There may be other colors in use that I haven't noticed. In particular, contrary to what the legend currently says, I have not noticed any purple station symbols.

Also contrary to what the legend currently seems to say, low display-levels show the good stations, while higher levels show progressively more obtunded stations. The highest setting adds name-labels.

Main Specific Suggestion: Reword the legend to match the actual map behavior. The actual map behavior seems mostly reasonable.

Additional remark: IMHO the behavior could be slightly improved by making the labels option orthogonal to the choice of which stations to display. For example, it would make sense to show and label just the green stations, or just the green and blue stations, et cetera.

Additional minor remark: Check the spelling of /participating/.

  Board messages or moved messages

Hello,

I can't read those posts that are moved etc. Where did it go wrong with my subscription? Can only see the public part of the forum. I'm station 2588 and like to read the fine-tune details etc.

Using data from vttoga in vlfrx-tools
Posted by: emuman100 - 2019-08-05, 15:58 - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

Is the server software capable of using data from vttoga, part of vlfrx-tools? Setting up a system (triple-axis VLF receivers) is not very easy for the beginner, but is it possible to use data from vttoga for those who use vlfrx-tools?

  Testing detecting range
Posted by: MooreGeo - 2019-07-26, 16:32 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

Is it possible to see if you can detect strokes in other regions?  I am interested to see how far away my station will pick up strikes but I assume I'm limited to North and South America.  However I very often see lines going from strikes in North America going to the middle of Europe.  If this is something I could turn on or test, I would really like to try it.  Thank you in advance for and advice.

  Live Lightning Vector Map
Posted by: vedrin - 2019-07-22, 14:01 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (3)

The Live Lignhtning Vector Map is not being displayed in Chrome (Version 75.0.3770.142 (Official Build) (64-bit)) since last week, while it used to work fine before in Chrome and is still available in Firefox (latest version). Is this a known issue and are there any plans for a fix?

  Lightning Types Blitzortung Hardware Detects
Posted by: Sleepypup - 2019-07-16, 04:21 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (5)

I have read in a few places on the forum that the Blitzortung network in its current configuration primarily if not entirely detects only cloud to ground strokes.  Is that an accurate statement?  I understand IC and CC are difficult to plot accurately and are generally weaker signals.  I want to make sure when explaining the network to others I am providing the correct information.

Thanks.

  Observation: System Blue Magnetic Sensors
Posted by: drossbach1 - 2019-07-12, 15:54 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

Plated-through hole reliability:
After having poor results with both ferrite and large loops (station 1808), the Magnetic sensor pre-amp was removed and examined on a bench with a few millivolts input at 10kHz.  It was discovered that the magnetic sensor preamps were functioning as attenuators rather than as amplifiers.  Further investigation showed that the plated-through holes supplying 3.3 volts to the 4531's showed no continuity.  These were then wired-through and the preamplifiers then functioned as expected. A similar (but intermittent) issue was found on one of the RJ-45 pins.  This was remedied by applying flux to the top side of the affected pin and reheating the pin.  The flux drew solder from the lower pad through the missing plating to the top connection.  Cabling and environmental performance is currently being evaluated before returning the preamps to service.
.... Be aware there are apparently boards that may have marginal plated-through connections.

  API for querying own region?
Posted by: API - 2019-07-12, 13:09 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (1)

Is there an API to query if there is a lighting in your own region? You could use that info for home automation like closing blinds. I've already searched but didn't find anything.

  Data-feed frequently offline
Posted by: NWBNLX - 2019-07-09, 14:51 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (2)

The data feed of our lightning data often gets 404. Can the IT crew of Blitzortung please provide a stable connection to third party applications. Don't forget that this project is supported by a community of volunteers Smile
