  Let's get some global coverage
Posted by: lasse - 2015-06-11, 17:22 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi there,

catchy title? Yes, but the text will be worth the time reading it.

About myself: I'm a German living in Berlin, studying physics and consider myself a hacker. I'm a member of the c-base, the oldest and one of the biggest hackerspaces: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-base or www.c-base.org

"A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace or hackspace) is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and collaborate." (wikipedia)

I use blitzortung for quite some time now, and would definitely like to see it grow. Living in Berlin I don't see a great need for a station at my home. But there is another activity of mine that maybe would be very useful: I'm an active participant of the yearly chaos communication congress (over 10'000 people) and this years chaos communication camp (around 4'500 people). Between the thousands of German visitors there are always hundreds of hackers from all around the world.

I have read the newsletter and some posts here and there and know there's only little information about the upcoming system blue.

So my questions is simple: Can you please tell me when to expect the system blue and what the estimated price range will be?

If I have the answer before the first week of august I can promise you to talk with people all over the world or people who have an one hop contact to everywhere. And those people have the interest and capability to build and maintain the stations and most of them even have the funding to get right into it.

places I have in mind and I know at least one person associated with them:
Cairo
Seoul
Hong Kong and/or Shanghai
Tokio
Canary Islands
Singapore
Kathmandu

And I'm positive I will meet a lot more people in August and December, to see a list of possible candidates check the https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/List_of_Hacker_Spaces

I will invest my time to see the global coverage grow and infuse more people with the idea to track lightnings in their region if you are able to help me with it.

If you have any questions about myself, the c-base, hackerspaces, the ccc camp or congress etc. don't hesitate to ask.

  Cannot login any more
Posted by: Sebastian.Mahr - 2015-06-08, 14:53 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Hi,

sorry for bothering you with that strange question.
I cannot anymore login to both blitzortung.org and lighningmaps.
Yesterday blitzortung worked, I clicked the forgot password link. Now no system lets me in.

I had re-activated my station 1053 and it is sending successfully.

Can someone help me here? Or post a link to where I could get help from?

Thanks,
Sebastian

Who knows how you have set up MyBlitzortung so the lightning alarms appear on Twitter . An example would be my favorite .
My version is the 1.4

Wer weiss wie man myblitzortung einrichten muss, damit die Blitzalarme auf Twitter erscheinen. Ein Beispiel wäre mir am liebsten.

  membership and ownership
Posted by: cg617 - 2015-06-02, 16:39 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

Hi All,

I've had my marker in for a kit for probably over a year, but with the demand last year and the upgrade to the system more recently, obviously haven't been offered the option to start.

It also looks like I won't be considered, due to the saturation of monitoring stations around me (SE England), unless they want a scattering of 'blues' and can get involved that way (but I suspect priority will be given to proven participants (understandably), so will again fail to meet the requirements).

Can people be members without having hardware?  If not, then we can't be part of this project though bad luck of locality.  I'm sure there are a lot of 'dabblers' who would love to get involved but would fail to meet the recent and coming location requirements.

Any suggestions?

regards
Chris

  DHCP Failure
Posted by: Mihai-Florin.Necula - 2015-06-01, 09:32 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (14)

Hi there,
Could you please help me with an issue which is keeping my station offline?

The error message on my station is DHCP failure with the displayed IP 192.168.1.103 (mask 255.255.0.0)
I cannot access the station by imputing the static IP apearing on the screen

I have both the router assigning this IP to the station in permanent mode and also the station was configure to have this IP and mask but I cannot find a way to access the station.
Problems with DHCP started some time ago (this is why I configured the station to have a static IP) and everytime the DHCP failure error presented itself I could not access the station.

These were usually sorted out by shutting down the router and the station for some time... but nothing works this time around.

later update;
just performed an hard reset (pressing both buttons to return to original values) and enabled the router to assign any IP to the mac of the station but I still cannot access the station on the default 192.168.1.235 IP now showing on the screen

  Dielectric grease
Posted by: Dale.Reid - 2015-05-23, 15:23 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (4)

Most of the frequencies used here are lower, and the commercial dielectric grease seems to have little or no effect from DC on up to even UHF ham bands.

But what about using the stuff on the GPS antenna connections, especially for those of us with the need to add in an extension cable?

Does the signal in the GPS antenna to the chip path have enough difference that one should be careful about the application of the protective grease?

In general I'm impressed about how well the stuff does help in humid environments.

Dale
