  Infrasound
Posted by: Bonzo - 2015-09-15, 16:57 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (10)

I am wondering whether it would be useful to add an infrasound detector to the Blitzortung System.

Obviously it could register the sound of thunder of a local thunderstorm and add some time information. At least for regions with high station density.

But moreover, there seems to be a correlation of infrasound and the appearance of sprites. [1]

So, to register pulse profiles of the EM wave in conjunction with the infrasound profiles would add a fundamental research experiment to the system.

The sensor could be realized by means of so-called microbarometers. That has to be evaluated. Also the effect of interferers like wind turbines en stuff.

This is just an idea, not a proposal.

What do you think, it this interesting? Feasable? Desirable? Are there people out there that have the skills (and interest) to add according algorithms to the existing software?

Or is that completely out of interest for this project?

BTW: I am connected with the LOFAR radiotelescope [2] where some stations are also equipped with infrasound detectors as a part of the infrasound array of the Dutch meteorology institute KNMI.

cheers

Green System PCB 6 Ver 8.0. No Green Light
Posted by: Kalamara - 2015-09-10, 03:38 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (12)

Just tonite I had finished installing the antenna outside. I turned off the Green system board Pcb 6 ver 8.0

Now when I go to start the tracker program its starts up and then it shuts down right after 2 or 3 seconds.

I have the yellow light blinking GPS blue light  timer to GPS flashing every sec and the red light is on.

Now I dont see the green light going on it is off.  Undecided

Is there any procedure to hard reboot this board so I hope to get the default settings working again and that
the software tracker would be able to communicate to the data board. Sounds like the software is not able to
communicate.

As an update as of 1216am DST I just was able to get the green to stay on by setting the jumpers back on
for the GPS at 9600 baud now thats ok but now the software tracker loads up then shuts down a few seconds later
darn it! Confused  Dodgy Sad

Thanks  Blush

Hallo,

Would a station in northern England be any use?
Posted by: G3WGV - 2015-09-01, 22:01 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (12)

Hi all,

Just found this very interesting site and it looks like a fun thing to do. I see that there are lots of UK stations already but a fairly large gap in coverage between the Manchester area and Edinburgh. I'm in central Cumbria, up near the Scottish border, so more or less midway between the existing stations. I have a very quiet rural location and plenty of room to experiment with antennas, etc. Like many on here, I am a radio amateur, active on HF CW. I'm also a light aircraft owner/pilot, so I have more than a passing interest in the weather.

Would a station up here be of value, or is there already sufficient coverage in the UK?

Regards,

John

  Stationsymbol colors on the map?
Posted by: hazet - 2015-08-31, 07:58 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - No Replies

Hello
Just noticed "yellow" colored station symbols on the map. In the station list my station is marked as idle. Many stations in southern France are actually marked as idle . . . However If I look at my station status, it's is marked as normal? Can anyone explain this discrepancy? Additionally, I would suggest to add a legend for the different station symbol colors on the left side of the map. Red=interference, yellow=idling, green=operational, gray=offline.

Greetings from the Provence

  Detect H field from magnet?
Posted by: mvdswaluw - 2015-08-28, 06:49 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (3)

Hello,

I would like to know if any of you have tried to see if variations in the H-field could be detected if you move a magnet in front of a ferrite antenna.
It would probably need to be moved/waved a bit fast because of the low pass filtering in the preamps to see anything.

The reason why I ask is because I want to see if I can make a system to detect magnets being brought into a fitting room.
Shoplifters use strong magnets to take of security labels. If you can detect their magnets, you can catch them in the act.

I already have a system that can detect a magnet at about 30cm, but I want to extend this to about 80-100cm.
The (leaked) pictures of the system blue preamp look a lot like what I had in mind to make, but in my case with low pass filtering and probably a lot of gain.

Milan.

  Lightning not detected..
Posted by: Aythya - 2015-08-27, 20:00 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

Greetings all!

Just a curiosity more than anything..

Last night we had quite a wicked little storm (along with others in the area) move through my community..  There was easily a few flashes every minute (or more) for about a half-hour at least.  I know for sure there were storm cells besides the one over us, causing all sorts of lightning at the same time.

Curiously, not a single stroke was detected by ANY station, mine included (though it may have been too close).

I did observe that all the lightning appeared to be inter, and intra cloud and very little, if any cloud to ground.

I wonder if that makes any difference?  I know that storms earlier in the day in my area were quite accurately picked-up, so it's not an issue of lack of coverage..

Ideas, thoughts?   Makes me wonder if we are missing a lot more strikes than we realize...

Cheers
Hal

Using System Blue with Mac computers
Posted by: wilsonlaidlaw - 2015-08-26, 12:39 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (2)

For the last 13 years, I have used exclusively Mac computers and don't intend to change back to Windows or Unix for the foreseeable future. If I purchase a System Blue to become a station in the Haut Var in France (Tourtour), which is a lightning hot spot, with my house being hit by lightning twice in 12 years, are there versions of the software to work with Mac computers? I would very much prefer not to install virtualisation software such as Parallels or Fusion + Windows or Boot Camp, given the problems this has caused in the past, when I installed Parallels then Fusion plus Windows 8 to try and run medical practice management software, only available in a Windows version. Boot Camp, Apple's own version of a Windows operation partition, caused different but as many problems, particularly with running daily back ups.

As a newbie to Lightning detection, any advice would be most welcome.

Wilson

PS Is the final price of the System Blue kit announced yet?

  e-field antenna length question..
Posted by: Aythya - 2015-08-25, 09:33 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (5)

Greetings all!

I have a quick question in calculating the length of the e-field antenna.. (in order to enter it into the station details section)..

I want to put a few loops at the end of the copper wire antenna.. would the antenna length be whatever the length of the wire rod was BEFORE twisting the loops (longer), or just the length AFTER creating the loops (shorter)..

My gut feeling is that the loops are still considered part of the antenna length, even though they aren't straight.

Thanks everyone Cool
