  E field antenna height
Posted by: DrRobin - 2016-09-27, 21:23 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (10)

Hi,

I have just received my system blue and going to make E field and H field antennas.  I have a couple of questions:

What is the minimum height for the E field antenna?
If I mount the system blue in my shed then I doubt I can get the E field antenna above 5m.
If I put the E field antenna in my house the E field antenna will have to go on my wind speed/direction mast, the wx station transmitter is located about 4m below, will this be okay as the speed/direction is just low frequency switch contacts?

The H field antenna is going to be two ferrite rod antennas, these will probably be in the loft.  I assume that these are both mounted horizontally, one facing east-west and the other north-south?

If I put my system blue in a remote location and use a wifi router what is the minimum recommended distance from system blue to wifi?

Sorry for the stupid basic questions but I would like to get it installed in the best place first time.

Thanks

Robin

  Wen Interface Autentifizierung

Hallo liebe Forumsmitglieder!

Hi all.

I have soldered in the past but feel it would be better to ask if someone with greater experience would be able to assist Smile

Fully prepared to pay for your time, make a donation etc.

I live in south Oxfordshire so either happy to post my kit out or visit.

Thanks in advance,

Red system 7.4 to 8.1 network no good !
Posted by: JAK97433 - 2016-09-27, 04:06 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (10)

Hello,
I have the RED system with version 7.4 which works fine. I wanted to move to version 8.1 but after 20 minutes there is no network connection and asked me to check the network cable. I tried version 8.0 and 8.1, the same finding, network problem !!!
Have you an idea about this failure.
Thank you and read you
JAK

I handed version 7.4 and no problem!

  System Blue Not Working
Posted by: tferoli - 2016-09-26, 23:53 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (10)

Hey Everyone,

I have a System Blue (PCB 19.3).  The system does not seem to be working.  I have everything soldered up according to the instructions... When I plug it in the following happens:

- Solid Red Power Light on main PCB.
- Solid Light on both E and H field boards.
- GPS light (on PCB, not the blue LED soldered on) blinks like 7 times and just then off.

I have a grounding clamp connected to the outside of the RG6, seemed a good place to ground.

That's all that seems to happen.  LAN is not active (no lights on router or PCB RJ45 network connector).

Is this normal? If I have bad GPS reception (this is on my work bench in basement) will the unit fail to boot?

Thoughts?

Confused

  Moved Antenna, Now Interference Mode
Posted by: chevyman142000 - 2016-09-25, 16:53 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hey guys,

I moved my e-field antenna/probe outside yesterday (made a PVC pipe enclosure). It was up in the attic above the garage. Since then, it seems that it is in interference mode more than normal. See below for the numbers that I'm seeing. Let me know what you think, should I move it back in the attic or what?

Thanks!

  LightningMaps.org having issues?
Posted by: piepants - 2016-09-24, 04:23 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (14)

LightningMaps.org seems a bit flaky today, it's not showing any signals and there's gaps appearing in the graphs. Seems to be affecting more than one region too (I checked Oceanic and Europe). Is this a known bug? Thanks Smile

  How close is too close?
Posted by: Dale.Reid - 2016-09-22, 11:17 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

We are having an unusual amount of rain and storms with a lot of lightning yesterday and today here in Wisconsin, in the upper midwest of the USA.  The 'train' effect of a stationary positioned front with a lot of energy from the south is positioned so wave after wave of some pretty hot cells has moved over me one right after another.  Usually there is a pause of about 30 to 60 minutes and then along comes another one.

Rain total is now 5.51", with more expected.  Too wet.

But the position of the storm train across my location has provided many cells with lots of cloud to ground lightning to watch.  It is interesting that the main path is about ten miles south of me, although some move by over me, too.

One thing I noticed is that my station's data is used for strike plots up to about 3 to 5 miles away, but anything closer than that shows no participation and many other stations' data used to plot the strike.  This was very consistent all afternoon and evening as I watched.

I wonder if the algorithms screen out extremely close strikes, with some sort of physics being that super close strikes are not well captured with the stations?

Just curious if anyone has had their station participate in calculating strikes just a few miles or even less?

Oh, the expanding circles for predicting the onset of thunder was very easy to evaluate with hundreds  of chances to watch the circle touch my station and the thunder, if heard, was amazingly close in timing to the estimate provided by the circle.  Very nice.

Dale

Bug Location marker not working?
Posted by: Arceushera - 2016-09-17, 01:51 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (4)

Okay, so I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 10, and when I try to use the location marker, it does nothing on Chrome, and just turns blue on Microsoft Edge, no marker. This has been happening for MONTHS on different WiFi networks, public, mobile hotspots, private, etc., but to no avail. I didn't report it, hoping it was temporary. I am certain that the laptop has the ability to be located, and I've allowed the site explicit permission to use my location. Plz help me.
