  Linear power supply
Posted by: JupiterJoe - 2017-08-30, 18:24 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (25)

I just received a TeraDak U9 linear power supply to replace the iPad power supply I was using to power the Blitzortung blue board. It was a little costly, but it did cut down on the noise pretty good, as shown on the magenta E-field channel in the attached pictures.
I'm not sure if it really makes a big difference in accuracy of the system, but I'm pleased with the results.

Question What's the purpose of J1 contacts on the System Blue?
Posted by: IZh - 2017-08-26, 11:46 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - No Replies

Hi!

Just curiosity, what's the purpose of J1 contacts on the System Blue? The nearby J0 is for enabling low-pass filters. But what is J1 for?

Thank you.

  High field RJ45
Posted by: Banff - 2017-08-25, 18:30 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (11)

New sys blue kit builder here, looking for help with the 3 RJ45 connectors. Seems the front panel space for the Highfield RJ45 connector is smaller than the other RJ45 space. Just wondering if I am missing something, or if the Hf gets a different style of connector. Thanks. Jt

Antenna - The never ending story
Posted by: RichoAnd - 2017-08-25, 09:08 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (19)

We don't need big antennas for the range 30-300km

I have made lots of antennas and they all work well.
Important - Self-resonance must be high.

First I made a "reference antenna" 160mm Ø, 1mm, 14turn

Then one for a 75mm standard plastic tube
A piece of brake pipe and a 48-turn transformer on a toroid

The top antenna is isolated from toroid and is also used as an E-Field antenna - Perhaps the third channel in the H-Field antenna could be for E-Field  Idea Wink Rolleyes

  Hurricane Harvey
Posted by: pasense - 2017-08-25, 08:46 - Forum: Hardware, Software, Lightning Physics - Replies (3)

Hurricane Harvey is showing strong lightning activity in at least two bands in its north-eastern quadrant. Thunderstorm activity is usually associated with a strengthening of the cyclone, so Harvey may even become a strength 3 hurricane.
Last year's hurricane Matthew produced a large number of sprites during such a phase, indicating very strong positive lightning.

  Station Status
Posted by: bradld - 2017-08-23, 20:04 - Forum: Website, Maps and Applications - Replies (5)

Just curious how anyone might be monitoring station status, i.e. is anyone monitoring somehow when a station goes offline, stops reporting or has no stroke count.  I kindly received a message from a fellow user yesterday that my station was online but was not reporting strokes.  Without that I would not have known as I do not always check my station info web page.  I appreciate any feedback or suggestions on this topic - including (hopefully) cost free solutions.

Thanks,

Brad

  Remarkable Conditions Today?
Posted by: N0BGS - 2017-08-21, 20:46 - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

Look at the Lightningmaps.org site today.  Amazing.

Strikes from the central US are being detected at stations in Japan and even Australia and all over the world. Strikes in Central Europe are being received in the US.

Being new to this perhaps this happens commonly but I've never seen it before.

Must be the eclipse   Rolleyes
