System Blue Network Interface Question - chevyman142000 - 2016-09-13
Hello everyone,
I just got my system blue built last week and powered up. It has been running fine as far as I can tell. I was just looking at my network switch and noticed that the port it is plugged into is only running at 10mb half duplex and is throwing some CRC and late collision errors on that port. I tested the cable run between the switch and the detector and it checked out. Does it sound like I may have done a bad solder job on the nic?

The ethernet controller is a Microchip ENC28J60 which is only 10mbit (and the SPI interface it uses can't handle much more than that anyway). Looking at the schematic and datasheet, it's also set to run half-duplex in this case (LEDB sinks to ground). Couldn't hurt to check the solder joints on the RJ45 jack and crystal Q1.

If you have a managed network switch you can set the port to 10 Mbps and Full duplex and the Ethernet will work fine.

I checked the solder joints and everything looks good. I tried a different switch port and never could get a link if I did any full duplex or anything above 10mb. I'm also still seeing errors on the port, maybe because it is only running at half duplex? Not sure.

I know you said you've tested the cable, but have you tried another one? And has it been separated from the H and E field preamp cables and other sources of interference?

Yes, I have also brought it down to the basement and plugged it directly into the switch with a new/different patch cable and got the same results.

Who supplied the socket? There are hundreds of variations on RJ45 sockets if sourcing yourself it would be very easy to get one very similar but not correct.

Well the part numbers agree, a search of the Hanrun site with hr9111 only brings up 7 results 05a only one... Presumably it's not possible to fit one of the other RJ45 sockets into the LAN position? Or as the HR911105A has magnetics inside perhaps they have been overheated or a connection inside damaged?

Will run 10 Mbps Half unless you have managed switch and set the port to 10 Mbps Full.
For example I am using a Cisco 2960G and can fix port speeds and duplex.
What errors are you seeing? Do you mean collisions?
Collisions are normal for 10 Mbps Half.
