Board layout data, component list, program download, server access, that is all the skilled crowd out there is in need of to participate. So you, the developers, get your hands free to keep the backbone running instead of replying to 600 inquiries and forum posts. All the sucessful 'open' projects I'm aware of (Raspberry, Red Pitaya ..) do not handle their hardware.
And of course the way of ordering and shipping hardware will be changed next year.
